A staggering 90 percent of the 111 countries that participated in a hearing on the review of the human rights situation have praised Bangladesh, Law Minister Anisul Huq has said.
A high-level team of representatives, led by Huq, participated in the fourth review meeting of the Universal Periodic Review of the human rights situation in Bangladesh at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday (Nov 13). He later briefed the media virtually.
The law minister said that steps to uphold human rights despite various obstacles have been highlighted there.
Huq said that some countries reiterated that they want free and fair elections. The constitutional position of Bangladesh regarding the election has been highlighted. At this time, the position of Bangladesh on Khaleda Zia was explained. There were no questions from anyone afterwards.
Meanwhile, the law minister told the UN Human Rights Council that the opposition BNP’s demand to hold elections under a caretaker government is “completely unconstitutional and illegal”.
Referring to the independent Election Commission (EC) of Bangladesh, he said, the government is committed to holding the next national elections in a free, fair and peaceful manner with the participation of the people.
Participating in the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), Law Minister Huq highlighted the violence and destruction perpetrated by the BNP on Oct 28-29.
Apart from brutally beating a policeman to death, they attacked the residence of the Chief Justice and other judges and torched the police outpost. At this time, he claimed that no arbitrary arrests were made and the law enforcement agencies performed their duties according to the law.
The delegation included Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations Office in Geneva Mohammad Sufiur Rahman.
